Even after getting into college, it's still a hassle!

I thought that after college, forms & headaches would cease to exist for me. Wow, was I wrong. Now that my boyfriend has been accepted to Pace, it has been nothing but forms, phone calls & emails not being returned, countless trips to admissions, financial aid & today I went to housing to put down my deposit since he & I are no longer getting an apartment due to parental non-cooperation. That's right-after three months of planning, talking to real estate agents, looking into loan companies, on-campus jobs, all of it fell through because of parents. But life treks on. At this stage of the game, since I am applying late for on-campus housing, I'm not even guaranteed placement & neither is my boyfriend. Plus all his credits don't transfer, we may want to switch from NYC to Westchester campus for our major, & we still want to get an apartment together at some point during the 4 years. Plus studying, keeping our GPA's up & making sure Pace administration doesn't screw up-it's just all too annoying!!! This is more of a rant blog more than anything so don't feel like you were supposed to learn something from this. But actually, maybe you can learn something: Complete all paperwork (including online) on-time or ahead of time, save a copy of ALL of your documents (especially financial), & if the administration doesn't answer your emails or calls, harass them until they do. Just because they don't like their job & don't want to be there, they're still getting paid & they're there to help you. I mean let's face it, we are paying hundreds of thousands to be there so we should be getting the best. Lastly, always have backup plans because a lot of times, class & housing choices fall through. Good luck everyone!

Until next time... ciao 💗

Pace Fest

I know it has been a while since I've blogged but finals are coming up on top of working for AmeriCorps, so things are a little crazy right now. In addition to this, I have created a little project for myself.

I have taken the liberty to create Pace Fest for either Fall 2011 or Spring 2012. Pace Fest will consist of a bunch of activities for students to have fun. Pace University is a great school but it doesn't have much to do on campus other than clubs & fundraising. Pace Fest will give students the ability to let loose for one weekend, play games, meet up with their friends & to meet new people, & to listen to a musical guest. Yes, I said it. There will be a musical guest. I was thinking along the lines of Eminem or Linkin Park, but we'll see. I still have to run all of my ideas by Student Development & Campus Activities (SDACA) to get everything finalized but I think I am well on my way to making this happen. If anyone has any input for this event or you would like to help fundraise, please let me know. Thanks!!!

Until next time... ciao 💗

When the People Lead, the Leaders Will Follow

"When the people lead, the leaders will follow." - Mahatma Gandhi

"I am a third-year undergraduate, passionate to address health disparities between developing & developed nations. This quote resonates with me because sometimes I am frustrated with the stagnation from the side global leaders in alleviating these disparities & eager to take matters into my own hands. This summer, I will be establishing an eye clinic in rural India to address a global health issue I have invested myself in: visual impairment. I hope the clinic will restore eyesight to thousands of people who otherwise would not have access to eye care. But now I wonder: am I the "people" or the "leader"? -Malini Veerappan

In response to Malini's question, I feel that people want to be that group of "people." They want to be that "leader" who will fight for what they believe & try to better our civilization & the human race. But excuses prohibit them from chasing their potential passion: "I can't miss work," "I don't have the time or energy," etc. If you have the true desire to help another person or animal for that matter, you will. Malini, for example, will be that type of person to make a difference for so many people. Are you up for the challenge to make a difference? Are you willing to immerse yourself completely & chase after a cause that you are passionate about? Take risks, be motivated, & lastly, passionately lead for the better.

Useless Ads

So I'm online downloading new music & stumbled upon (no reference to the actual site, which if I might say is the best thing to keep a bored person busy. I'm speaking off experience) an advertisement that showed an ENORMOUS spider with the title "Australian man-eating spider: real or fake?" I love Australia & aside from the Real World season that completely turned me off, I love the place. I would love to visit Australia, but there is no way l am going to a place where creatures can devour me. So I use the second greatest invention after Facebook, Google, to look up this man-eating spider. I get a huge amount of spider pictures that live in Australia that are dangerous but don't eat humans, which annoys me.

So I’m angry at the misleading advertisements that just take up space on a website. I understand that someone has to pay for the site but goodness gracious, can’t it be a legit sponsor! That’s all I’m asking for. It doesn't just happen online, it happens on TV, the radio, & billboards. You can call me naive for wanting things to be perfect but all I’m saying is I don't want to be misled & completely annoyed. It really irks me when something sparks my interest & happens to be fake. & even though every other creature in Australia actually does have the potential to kill me, I’m still down for the trip for some rich Australian accents & kangaroos.

Until next time... ciao 💗

30 Habits that will Change your Life

-Exercise 30 minutes every day. Especially if you don’t do much movement while working, it’s essential that you get some daily exercise. 30 minutes every day are the minimum recommended for optimal health.
-Eat breakfast every day. Breakfast is the more important meal of the day, yet so many people skip it. Personally, I like to eat a couple of toasts in the morning along with a fruit beverage.
-Sleep 8 hours. Sleep deprivation is never a good idea. You may think that you are gaining time by sleeping less, when in reality you are only gaining stress & tiredness. 8 hours is a good number of hours for most people, along with an optional 20 minutes nap after lunch.
-Avoid snacking between meals. Snacking between meals is the best way to gain weight. If you are hungry, eat something concrete. Otherwise don’t. Update: for clarification, I mean don’t eat junk food between meals, but eating real food it’s ok.
-Eat five portions of fruits & vegetables every day. Our body & brain loves getting vegetables & fruit, so I highly recommend eating as much of them as possible. Five portions are the dose that’s usually recommended by many health associations.
-Eat fish. Fish is rich in omega 3 & other healthy elements. At least one meal per week of fish should be enough for getting all these nutrients.
Drink one glass of water when you wake up. When you wake up, your body is dehydrated & needs liquid. Make the habit of drinking one glass of water after you wake up in the morning. Also, drink more during the day.
-Avoid soda. Soda is often one of the most unhealthy beverages you can find. Limit your consumption of soda as much as possible & your body will be grateful for that.
Keep your body clean. I don’t advise spending your day in front of the mirror, but a minimum of personal care does never hurt.
-If you smoke, stop it. There’s no reason to smoke anymore, & quitting is possible.
-If you drink, stop it. Same as above. Don’t think that alcohol will solve your problems. It never does. The only exception is one glass of wine per day during meals.
-Take the stairs. This is just a hack that forces you to do a minimum of exercise. Instead of taking the elevator, take the stairs.

Productivity habits

-Use an inbox system. Make the habit of keeping track of all the ideas & things that come to mind. You can use a notebook to do this, & then sync everything on your computer.
-Prioritize. If you have a list of things to do, where do you start? One way is to prioritize your list. If you are in doubt, ask yourself: “If I could only accomplish one thing today, what would it be?”
-Plan, but not too much. Planning is important, & you should decide in advance what you are going to do today or this week. However, planning for more than a few weeks is usually inefficient, so I would not worry too much about that.
-Wake up early. Waking up early in the morning is a great way to gain extra time. I personally like to wake up at 5 am, so that by 9 am I have already accomplished what otherwise would have taken me many days.
-Check your email only twice per day. Email can easily become an addiction, but it’s usually unnecessary to check it every 10 minutes. Make an effort & check your email only once or twice per day, see if the world will still rotate as before after you try this.
-Eliminate unimportant tasks. Being busy all day does not mean you are doing important stuff. ---Eliminate every activity that’s not important & focus on what really matters.
-Clean off your desk & room. Having a clean room & desk is important to maintain focus & creativity.
-Automate. There are a lot of tasks that you need to perform every day or every week. Try to automate them as much as possible.
-Set strict deadlines. When you do something, decide in advance when you’re going to stop. ------There’s a rule that states that you will fulfill all the time you have available for completing a task, so make a habit of setting strict deadlines for maximizing your productivity.
-Take one day off per week. Instead of working every day, take one day off per week (for example Sunday) where you are not going to turn on your computer. Use that time for doing recreational activities like going for a walk.

Personal Development Habits

-Read 1 book per week. Reading is a good way to keep your brain active. With just 30 minutes per day, you should be able to read one book per week or more than 50 books per year.
-Solve puzzles. Quizzes, word games, etc. are all good ways to exercise your brain.
-Think positively. You are what you think, all the time.
-Make fast decisions. Instead of thinking for one hour wherever you are going to do something, make your decisions as fast as possible (usually less than 1 minute).
-Wait before buying. Waiting 48 hours before buying anything is a tremendous money saver, try it.
-Meditate 30 minutes per day. A great way to gain clearness & peace is through meditation. 30 minutes are not a lot, but enough to get you started with meditation.

Career habits

-Start a blog. Blogging is one of the best ways to put your word out. It doesn’t have to be around a specific topic, even a personal blog will do.
-Build a portfolio. If your job is creating stuff, building a portfolio is a great way to show what you are capable of. You can also contribute stuff for free if that applies to your work.

NARAL Pro-Choice America + Planned Parenthood

Just to make it clear, I am pro-choice. I feel that a woman has the right to do what she wishes with her body & to make that decision. I do not, however, think it is okay to keep having the same mistake. Abortion is a tough pill to swallow, which is why women should take the necessary precautions in protecting oneself. Planned Parenthood can help protect oneself & help when accidents do happen.

I feel that it is a disgrace that the government is cutting the funding to keep Planned Parenthood alive & it should be stopped. Planned Parenthood offers pregnancy tests, various birth control contraceptives, gynecological services, & much more. Please help stop this disaster from happening & take a stand. Go to prochoiceamerica.org & sign the petition. I thank you in advance for standing up for women's rights.

Suicide Awareness Day

I find it absolutely amazing how some people are so completely ignorant. Let me tell you why I feel that ignorance is such a major problem in this world:

I was on Facebook & saw that there was a Suicide Awareness event, which is helping to prevent more suicides from happening. We as people are supposed to stick together & try to find a way to stop this tragedy from happening.

Well, I wasn't keeping up with the awful conversations that were being had on the wall of this event & when my boyfriend informed me about this, I was shocked. Here are a few of the many horrendous comments that were posted:

Ching Chang Chong writes, "post porn in honor of the fallen ones."

Joel Jacobz writes, "I vote we have a special Suicide Day for Pakis so they can all go around blowing themselves up, we could make a party out of it!"

So today, I wrote something on the event's wall: "This page is absolutely absurd. I cannot believe the comments that are being posted on a SUICIDE AWARENESS page. If you don't have anything supportive or heartfelt to say about this sore subject, don't comment. It is not okay for anyone of any race, gender, or sexuality to commit suicide. It is a tragedy & people should be trying to stop it-not post these awful comments. Why don't you all grow up & start helping instead of hurting? As a result of this immaturity, I'm officially going to put myself as Not Attending this event."

In a matter of seconds, I received 8 comments. I'll post a few:

Mc Alpha writes, "Ignorant. You are ignorant of the fact that suicide weeds out the week people. The people who don't deserve to live."

Michael Marrero writes, "tl;dr attention whore, no f**ks for you."

Then after that, pornography was posted on the wall.

I have a couple questions:
1. Why isn't the creator of this page shutting the page down? Was this the purpose of the page?
2. People have their pages shut down all the time for minor things. This is no "minor thing." This page contains porn along with verbally offense material. Facebook is not doing its job to monitor their site & this has to be taken care of.

If you are reading this, please spread the word. Suicide should be taken seriously. People in my high school as well as colleges have committed suicide & it is not a matter to be taken lightly. Moreover, DO NOT be involved in this Suicide Awareness Day event. As a matter of fact, try & stop it. Do your part & speak up.

Until next time... ciao 💗

The Human Experience

I sometimes find that films like these have actors that really do not believe in their cause & they just want their few hours of fame. However, I was surprised when the actor/writer & actor/producer came on stage & actually spoke to us personally on their beliefs. They were very intelligent people who really do believe what they portrayed on screen. They want to save the world & make it a better place for everyone. I was able to take a picture with the writer/actor & the main character. I would definitely recommend this movie to everyone- especially people younger than 25 who are all about saving the world & finding their purpose. It is very inspiring & makes you want to go out & do something to help people in need. So definitely watch this film. The Human Experience comes out on DVD in March so make sure you keep an eye out for it!

Senioritis: DearJohn Don't Redefine Rape

“House Republicans’ New Definition of ‘Rape-Rape’” is an article from Jezebel.com discussing the attempt to eliminate abortion coverage for women under government health insurance in all cases except for forcible rape & when the pregnancy endangers the life of the mother through the Hyde Amendment to the No Taxpayer Funding for Abortions Act. This redefinition of rape would eliminate coverage for abortions of pregnancies that result from statutory rape, incest, date rape, & sex during which the woman can not give consent because she is intoxicated or otherwise incapable of consenting. Though all of these types of rape can be as mentally & emotionally scarring & traumatizing for victims, House Republicans believe that pregnancies caused by forcible rape are the only ones that should be permitted to be aborted under Medicaid. A lawyer at the National Women's Law Center says, “This bill takes us back to a time when just saying 'no' wasn't enough to qualify as rape."

Not only is this an attempt to deal a giant blow to reproductive rights, but it further attacks the victims of what the GOP considers to be “non-forcible” rape, telling them that they did not go through enough physical & mental pain in order to be granted what it seems the GOP would call the “privilege” to abort the fetuses of their attackers. It is appalling to me that people still do not understand that rape is rape is rape is rape. It does not matter if your boyfriend, a friend of a friend, your father, or a stranger attacked you; it does not matter if you were underage, drunk, or had a knife held to your throat; if you were penetrated by a man without your express consent, you were raped. If that rape results in a pregnancy, you should have every right to abort that fetus. Would you want to have to raise a child while seeing the face of your attacker in that child every day, reminding you of that terrible attack? Unfortunately, most of the representatives who have signed on to support & try to pass this amendment don’t have to ask themselves this question; the vast majority of them are men. One of my good friends was gang-raped in her own driveway when she was fifteen & she got pregnant. This was a violent, forcible rape & she had private insurance, so she got an abortion, but it kills me to think about the case if she had been on Medicaid. Would she even be able to prove that it was forcible rape before the second trimester? That is another big question in this debate, as rape cases can go on for months, long enough for some fetuses to turn viable & be born. Don't go after the rape victims, House Republicans. They've been through enough & they do not need you to tell them that they haven't.

A Fleeting Thought: Music-beats for Babies

Lately its been "why do people enjoy this song?"

A question like this never used to bother me before, but all of a sudden sometimes i feel very confused as to why some music is popular. Specifically, the dubstep craze seeming to slowly infect the iPod of every High school in America.

The wording may be strong, but personally, I have no problem with dubstep music. I did a little research *COUGH*(Wikipedia)*COUGH* and dubstep is defined by a few simple musical characteristics.

Basically, Dubstep has 4 ingredients

  1. Syncopation

  2. A drum machine

  3. A wobbly bassline

  4. A DROP

These four things basically make up any Dubstep song. & for the most part its just a fun type of music to listen to. My personal favorite is with the bass all the way up in the car. It evokes this grand feeling of being invincible.....

or....

maybe I'm just a narcissist......

yea.....I'm probably just a narcissist.

ANYWAY! Dubstep is really just feel-good music with not a lot of lyrics & if so, it's just sampled from another song.

Back to my original question. WHY?! is dubstep so popular?

Well, aside from the obvious answer of being fun, I think we have a natal desire for the sounds we hear in Dubstep music. The wobbly basslines resemble the sounds we hear in the womb as a baby. All outside noises become muffled by the amniotic fluid in the womb. Furthermore, when our ears develop one of the first things we hear is the syncopated rhythm of the heartbeat, muffled & transformed again by our mother's amniotic fluid.

The reason one may crave such heavy bass lines & syncopated drops I guess can be the same reason we crave our mom's home cooking or wrap ourselves up in the covers tightly. It's warm & reminds us of home. In this case, we find that dubstep makes people want to be babies again, & if you've ever seen someone try & dance to dubstep, it seems like either they're learning to walk or throwing the world's greatest temper tantrum.

Whether or not you enjoy dubstep is up to you, but realize, that in all music there is an attempt to pluck at your psyche in some way or another. Dubstep just seems to be a little more obvious when they do it.

The iPad-A must have for college

It is so great to be out of high school & to be able to use my laptop in class. But even better than using my laptop in class is using my iPad. It's small, portable, & really handy for students. Here are some FREE apps that are a must-have for college students:
  1. The Dictionary.com App, which gives you access to over a million words
  2. The Rate My Professor App, which allows students to see what other students think of certain professors
  3. The iBooks app, which gives access to a mass library that could contain many of the books needed for class
  4. The BlackBoard App that enables you to view all of your classes & assignments from the BlackBoard App rather than going to BlackBoard.com

Check these cool apps out & if you don't have an iPad, I would DEFINITELY recommend it!

Hey College Students! GO TO SLEEP!

College students are not getting enough sleep, which impacts negatively on their grades & performance in the classroom. Spending nights studying for exams & writing papers, or even staying up too late talking to roommates (I know this bad sleep habit all too well) & watching TV can cause bad sleeping habits. Many students have part-time jobs & busy social lives which makes sleep not as much of a priority. This is a common mistake many college students make, including me. Additionally, I feel that I do not get restful sleep when I do get the chance to sleep. The mattresses that feel like cardboard make it very uncomfortable to sleep. & even though one may put padding down to make it more comfortable like me, it is still a struggle for comfort.

One way of getting better sleep is to exercise but not prior to going to bed. Exercise during the daylight hours for an hour to two hours. Moreover, have a routine bedtime. I know that it is hard to ask taking into account every other day my classes start at 2:30pm & the other days I start at 9:05am.

So overall not only is your GPA most likely going to be higher if you get an average of eight hours of sleep a night, but your health will be better as well. When people say, “You look like crap!” It’s usually a sign they can tell you haven’t been getting good sleep. Bags under the eyes, fatigue, & constantly yawning isn’t attractive. So do yourself a favor & get the rest your body needs to be healthy & active.

Until next time... ciao 💗
